An Order of Merit (or OoM) is a season-long league table. After each event you rank the players, award points by finishing position, and add them up across the season. The player with the most points at the end wins.
The common points schemes
- Top 10 (25 down to 1):
25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. Rewards the sharp end, and everyone in the top ten gets something. The most popular society scheme. - Simple (12 down to 1):
12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Flatter, kinder to the mid-field. - Position points: 1st gets the most, each place below scores one less. Simple to explain, but a big field stretches the gap.
Counting best-of rounds
Most societies let players miss a few events without it wrecking their season, by counting only each player's best rounds. If you play twelve events and count the best eight, a member can skip four and still win. It keeps the table fair when people can't make every fixture.
Handling ties in an event
When two players tie for a position, the fair method is to add the points for the positions they share and split them evenly. Two players tied for 1st share the 1st and 2nd points, so both get the average. This calculator does that for you.
